SAMA5D3 JTAG

Thu Jul 18, 2013 3:46 pm

The SAMA5D3 processor doesn't have RTCK signal for the JTAG. How to use SAM-ICE to connect directly to the chip without the RTCK?

Is it even needed? What version/firmware do you have on your SAM-ICE/J-LINK?

SWD mode should also be workable, adaptive clocking not so much.

The SAM-BA reported communication error with the RTCK connected to TCK. The SAM-BA won't try to connect if RTCK is not connected.

Looks like you have some bigger issues than the lack of RTCK.

Is this with a standard ATMEL EK board, or some custom board? If custom, please provide additional data.

This is a custom board. The debug serial port shows ROMboot when powered up or reset. The DDR2RAM is the same configuration as the EK board.

Then I guess I'd try to use SAM-BA via the serial or USB modes.

Then I'd reflect on the JTAG connector/wiring, the J-Link Commander output seems to suggest the chain simply isn't working. Getting things into, and through, the scan chain does not require RTCK.

If you had an EK board you could sanity check on that too.

The SAMA5 upon initial boot-up on a raw board needs to be "unlocked." This is done by communicating through both JTAG and through DBGU comm and/or USB-Serial comm. The manual is poor in its description of this. Look at Section 11.6.4 of the SAMA5D3 Series datasheet, 15 Oct 13 edition. Remember that the symptoms that are described above suggest this, although it is not for sure.

If you 'scope the JTAG TDO line, which on the SAMA5 is a tri-state output, you can easily see if it is floating or if it is being driven. Unless it is unlocked, the TDO line will remain floating and just look like garbagelike-cross-talk.

We have used DSTREAM with DS-5 on MYIR's MYD-SAMA5D3X platform. You can also download some guide on MYIR's website FAQ column.
