SAM-BA NO valid processor ID for AT91SAM9G20 CU

Thu Nov 06, 2008 1:33 am

I have several boards with 9G20s on them

On boards that have 9G20s marked AT91SAM9G20 CU-ES I can get SAM-BA connected to the board via USB

On boards that have 9G20s marked AT91SAM9G10 CU I can NOT get SAM-BA connected…and get a FATAL error from SAM-BA indicating that “NO valid processor ID found”

The datasheet (6384A–ATARM–28-May-08) for the 9G20 shows the Processor ID as:

9.12 Chip Identification
• Chip ID:0x019905A1

in the devices.tcl file found in SAM-BA v2.8 the device id is listed as: 0x019905A0

There appears to be an inconsistency here…

If I change the processor ID in devices.tcl file for the AT91SAM9G20 to 0x019905A1 as indicated in the datasheet SAM-BA does not connect to my boards with the 9G20 CU-ES…this makes sense I think…but I still cannot connect to the devices marked as 9G20 CU.

My questions:

Is there a difference between the CU and CU-ES parts?

What is the device id for the 9G20 marked with just CU?

According to ATMEL the processor ID is 0x019905A0. not 0x019905A1 as indicated in the datasheet...Despite this I am still unable to connect to my boards using usb and sam-ba2.8

I've written a little tcl script to talk to the AT91Boot_tcl.dll

With this script I can talk to my CU silicon using the debug serial port.

C:\Program Files\ATMEL Corporation\AT91-ISP v1.12\Examples\CAN TCLSH>tclsh85 DE59.tcl
TCL_Scan
DevList(0): COM1
TCL_Open
DevList(0): COM1
h_handle: 00A5AFC8
ChipID Int: 019905A1
ChipID Short: 05A1
ChipID Byte: A1
TCL_Close
End Test

Notice the chip id is as indicated in the datasheet (Things are starting to make sense)

Running the same script on the usb port yields an error f005: communications link broken.

C:\Program Files\ATMEL Corporation\AT91-ISP v1.12\Examples\CAN TCLSH>tclsh85 DE59.tcl
TCL_Scan
DevList(0): \usb\ARM0
DevList(1): COM1
TCL_Open
DevList(0): \usb\ARM0
h_handle: 00AB6DA0
Error 0xf005
while executing
"error [format "Error 0x%x" $err]"
(procedure "::CheckError" line 4)
invoked from within
"::CheckError $error_code "
(file "DE59.tcl" line 42)

I've scoped the USB lines and all looks ok..
I've checked the power supplies. OK.
Frequency on crystal is OK.

Not sure what to try next?

Latest news from Atmel indicates that there IS a problem with stability on the USB macro cell for the AT91SAM9G20 CU revA silicon...

So we got the same issue with our new board. We found a way to pass over it by the time that it will fixed.

script proposal:
...../sam-ba_cdc_2.8.linux_01/sam-ba_cdc_2.8.linux_01 /dev/ttyUSB0 AT91SAM9G20-EK ./at91sam9g20ek_demo_linux_nandflash_imageonly.tcl >./logfile.log &
sleep 3
echo "N#" > /dev/ttyUSB0

Other remarks over MS-windows SAM-BA 2.8 works with this kind of board.
